So what kind of  response rates can you expect when mailing your letters or postcards?

The industry “average” is anywhere from 1 to 5%- So if you mail 1000 postcards, this says that you can expect to get from 10 to 50 people that will respond for more information.

This does not mean that all those “responses” will convert to sales though. There are many factors that affect your response rates. The main factor of course is the quality of your list your mailing to. Are the leads older than 30 days or more? Have they been resold a gagillion times? Are they from a genealogy list from a failed MLM program, do they target a specific niche? Are they basically phonebook names? etc etc

You need to make sure the leads you buy are from a reputable company. The way leads are collected is vitally important to the success of your mailings! The lead lists need to constantly be updated and cleaned of old or bad addresses etc.

The quality of your mailing piece is the 2nd biggest factor…I touched on this in another post, but I’ll say it again here. If you are mailing envelopes, use colored envelopes if possible such as a light yellow, light blue, ivory, beige. You can use the more expensive cotton woven envelopes to attain that “professional” image, but in the home business arena that isn’t necessary.Save your money and just use the regular kind.

Some people will use windowed evelope with the mailing label showing through to give them a more “official” look such as a bill.

White envelopes are ok, but make sure they are good quality, don’t skimp and buy the ones you can see through. When using your return address, just put your return address and not your name, this will increase the readers curiosity and make them more inclined to open it. Pre printed lables are ok if your handwriting is kinda like chicken scratch lol.

If you have time and have good handwriting, then hand address the envelopes, but if you don’t, labels are ok…The recommended way is to have them put on the envelope with a laser printer. This will give the impression of  a professional, plus it wont’ stink of junk mail near as much.

Use a teaser on the outside of the envelope…Teaser copy is a printed message that might say something like “FREE gift inside” or “look inside now”…This does help!

 Put some time and thought into your lists, your mailing pieces and how they look and your responses will go up.

This has long been  a big debate over the years..what works better for your direct mail campaign? Well, I have to say postcards…Why? Because you don’t need to open an envelope to read the message!

Statistics show that a large percentage of direct mail pieces are thrown into the trash unopened! There is a right and a wrong way to prepare an envelope for your mail order campaign, but the fact is most people dont’ do it right!

8 out of 10 envelopes I get from people advertising their home business opportunity usually have a white label that is slapped on crooked and they use a rubber stamp for their return address that is also crooked or half faded. Now what does this say to you at first glance? To me, it screams “amateur”…It tells me that this person didn’t care enough about their business to make sure the label was straight and the stamp rubber stamp was better quality!

Your mailing piece is your “sales person”… You need to project a professional image, because like many other situations, you only get one chance to make a first impression!

Let’s  say you did it right, your envelopes were good quality, you laser printed the labels or hand wrote the addresses (with good penmanship)…Did you know that your envelope message can still go largely unnoticed? It’s true!

You NEED to stand out in the sea of credit card offers, and other mail people get on a daily basis! When sorting through the mail, a postcard has a way of sticking out saying hey look at me! TIP- Use astrobright colors like green, orange or yellows…Pastel colors are ok too, but the bright ones pull better…

On a postcard it is accepted to use a label instead of worrying about hand addressing, because you don’t have to worry about it being opened! Using postcards for direct mail or as some call it “mail-order” is a smart way to ensure you didn’t blow your ad budget!

Your message is there for the whole world to see, including all the hands that touch it while on it’s journey to your mail box! I dont’ have to sell you on the price of postage either! Postcards take .27 cent stamp verses at .41 cent stamp…This can be a big savings!

Postcards are less work to prepare for a mailing campaign! No folding letters, no sealing envelopes, they will save you time! If I were you I’d use postcards instead of direct mail letters. They are a great way to get the word out about your hot new business opportunity! Make sure your website is on them! You never know, maybe the postman is looking to make some extra money!

Tip #2- When adding a message at the bottom of your cards, keep it about 3/4 of an inch up from the bottom…The bar codes the post office uses won’t be printed right over your message…This might be the critical part of your message and you need it to be seen!

The one major thing I see happen to many people in the home based business arena is that they are bitten by the procrastination bug soon after they join their new business.

 At first they are all excited about their new venture…They dream of wealth and riches, they dream of saying goodbye to the rat race, to the boss that they know they are smarter than. Human beings have this habit of becoming “stuck in a rut”. Some people I feel actually are quite happy there.

We all say we want a better life, but how many of us really do what it takes to succeed?

In my tenure of MLM opportunities over the years I’ve seen it happen more than once. I’ll sign up a person, I’ll try to motivate them, I’ll say that I’ll help them in anyway possible and yet they still never quite take off in the business?

 I thought was it me? Did I fall short on my promise somehow to help them? Surely it was my fault…But I quickly learned that it’s true, you can lead that horse to the river, but you can’t make it drink.These people had already given up before they got started.

It’s not because they didn’t have the training, support and help, it’s because they procrastinated and made excuses…Ah, how quickly “life and reality” catches back up with people…After the high wears off of the thought of riches, we quickly fall back into that rut.

Having the “I’ll get to it some time” mentality will end you dreams quicker than anything! You must stop saying, I’ll do this once my mind is clear or once I get a hair cut or the lawn is mowed yada yada yada. To become a winner, you need that take action mentality…You must prioritize and learn how to better manage your time in order to become a winner.

Like it or not, the law of attraction works. If you are positive and believe that you are going to be successful, you will be and you will attract success like never before. STOP putting things aside for “another” day…You are living in that day…Even if you only put 20 stamps on 20 postcards and mail them daily, make that your goal. Even if you only place 1 solo ad a week, do it every week…Even if you only read a new website about marketing, try to read about it 3 times a week.

We are creatures of habit, the more you take time to study, learn and implement things toward your business, the more likely you will continue to do so.

Do something everyday to build your business! Dont’ fall into the trap of channel flipping on the couch thinking, oh I’ll get up after this commercial…Make yourself do it, nobody else is going to! Remember this statement and remember it well…The difference in the wealthy and poor comes down to this in most cases.

 The rich do the things that the poor do not want to do..The rich make sacrifices, the poor would rather grab a beer and watch TV then complain about their life. The rich always strive to better themselves, the poor live comfortably in their rut.

This is just the truth, nobody cares about your success…YOU have to make it happen, and that’s the way it is…Oh of course your close friends and family wish you well, but that’s it, the rest is up to you and only you. Being rich or poor always comes down to this, it’s a choice…Where we are in life comes down to the choices that we’ve made good or bad…

This might be the age old question, what sells the most, touting your products benefits or features?

I’ve been around the block you  might say and I’ve seen more than my share of sales letters…Some were good, some were bad and some were just plain ugly.

So what sells? What prompts you to buy? What was that one factor that made you yank out your wallet or purse? More often than not, you were sold on the benefits of a product or service! For example, lets say you are looking at a persons website for their home based business.

Do you really care about where their cutting edge nutritional supplement is manufactured or that it has no fillers or binders? Do you care that it is manufactured in a state of the art clean facility? Well, that is important, but that’s not why you are going to buy it right?

You are buying it because of it’s “benefits” not it’s “features”… You made the decision to purchase based on your emotional triggers or gut feelings. You are going to buy it because it says it can make you look 10 years younger in just 3 applications…or that it can turn your health around with just 3 glass fulls a day.

Human beings are all the same basically, we want to know what’s in it for us. We buy something to make ourselves feel or look better but more importantly we do this to gain the admiration of others! Think about this…If you were the only person in the world, would it really matter than you drove a 200,000 Mercedes Benz? Of course not, why?Because nobody would be around to ohh and aw and admire you in it…LOL

We love benefits! Late TV sums it up best! Why do you think they repeat themselves every five minutes? Was this a mistake the producer made? NO! They are reinforcing your buying decision! It works and very successfully! You need to be using the same methodology when writing your website text or for sales letters!

Start with an ATTENTION grabbing headline, then follow with a powerful “sub headline”…The sub-headline needs to start pushing the benefits hard! This will cause your readers to “hypnotically” read the rest of your letter! Use the words “why” and “because”…Why? Because people respond on a subliminal level to these words…People like answers to questions!

Seriously, studies have been done on this! So remember, steer clear of talking about about what your product can do, but rather focus on “WHY” people must have it and why they must buy from you!

Here’s a short ad you might want to mold as your own…yes it is generic…

Just be creative and remember, use the WHY to buy method, NOT the “here’s what we have method…

Sometimes the truth hurts, but in the realm of home business opportunities and MLM programs, this is just a fact. For years, I have seen people that will jump into one MLM program to the next looking for that quick buck, but all they ever end up with is broken dreams and resentment…They play the blame game.

Some people are just not cut out to be in business for themselves. Some people whether they admit it or not need the structure and hierarchy of a brick and mortar job. They need somebody looking over their shoulder or yelling at them because that’s the ONLY way anything will ever get done! Sad but true!

In the headhunting game we call MLM, most distributors are so hungry for a sign up, they’d recruit their dog and  cat if they could, unfortunately, they don’t have social security numbers… I do think my dog could bring in a few people though!

Another fact is most people say they want more time freedom and money, but they really don’t have that deep down burning desire to break away from the “norm”…They have become institutionalized to their jobs. They are stuck in their proverbial ruts, and quite honestly allot of people really like it there. They NEED that security of knowing next Friday, that XYZ amount of dollars will be on their paychecks.

You are either and entrepreneur or you’re not, it’s that simple! You cannot fake it until you make it. If you are not passionate about wanting to get ahead it will show when you talk to others. I see it all the time, people will join what they think is a good business, they’ll pay their fee, get all excited about the conference calls, the products, the compensation plan, but they end up and quit in 2 or 3 months.

The honest truth is that if you cannot afford to sustain an advertising/marketing campaign for the long haul, then you are already doomed to failure. Using the rent money or deferring a car payment to join a business is a disaster waiting to happen!

This is a pure “lottery mentality” and it doesn’t work! Dreaming of joining under some fat cat and hoping for spillover is also a pipe dream, it won’t happen. The odds of it happening is pretty close to getting struck by lightning just after you signed up someone like Mark Yarnell (one of the greatest networkers of all time).

Guys, if you can’t afford to place a classified ad after joining your HOT new biz opp, then don’t join. If you can’t afford to constantly mail letters or postcards to lead lists each week, then don’t join. We all put blinders on an throw caution to the wind and that’s great, but we need to except reality sometimes too. Joining a home business is NO different than a “real” franchise or other business! It takes time, dedication, upfront money, goals, time management skills, people skills, street smarts, business smarts…to name a few

 Bottom line, make sure you know what you’re getting into before joining a business opportunity. If you can afford to advertise after you join, and still take of care home and family, then maybe you have a chance, but don’t play scratch off tickets hoping you can mail 50 postcards a month or place a solo ad and get rich…You might just need better job…
